Location

The symposium will take place at the Mark Rose Natural Science Center at McKinney Roughs Nature Park located 13 miles east of Austin Bergstrom International Airport on Highway 71. Their street address is 1884 State Hwy 71 West, Cedar Creek, Texas 78612. To learn more about this 1,100-acre preserve, visit the website at http://www.lcra.org/community/mckinney_roughs.html. The park phone number is512-303-5073.

Primary Program Objectives

Participants will be able to discuss:

  • Significant impacts of toxic exposures on specific childhood life-cycle physiology and specific windows of vulnerability
  • Unique vulnerabilities of infants and children to environmental toxicants
  • Recent approaches to narrow the gap between research, clinical practice and public understanding
  • Research supporting evidence that some chemicals in the environment can interfere with hormone function by mimicking or blocking a natural hormone, or by directly interfering with the endocrine glands
  • Mounting concern that diseases which develop later in adult life may be associated with exposures in utero, during infancy or childhood

Participants will be able to review and describe:

  • Primary pathways of environmental exposure to toxins related to endocrine disrupters, childhood cancer, birth defects and developmental disabilities from conception to adolescence
  • Progress in demonstrating the principle of responsibility for the consequences of design and eliminating the concept of waste
  • Benefits to tracking the incidence and prevalence of certain chronic diseases through a health tracking system to monitor immediate health crisis such as lead, pesticide and mercury poisoning
  • Processes for local, state and federal agencies to include public and private sector organizations in multidisciplinary collaborations to address environmental health concerns of citizens
  • Pathways for indoor air pollutants and other environmental triggers to cause respiratory disease in infants and children

Participants will be able to examine and identify:

  • Reasons administrators must consider environmental exposure health risks to children when planning, renovating and building the places in which they will live, learn and play
  • Critical issues in regard to environmental justice and the disproportionate burden on poor and minority children
  • Evidence that environmental factors play an important role in contributing to the incidence of birth defects and developmental disorders (birth defects are the leading cause of infant mortality in the U.S.)
  • Consequences of bioaccumulation of neurotoxicants in the body fat of mothers and passed on to child in utero or through breast milk
  • Provisions of the law authorizing the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD) to lead a national longitudinal study of environmental influences — including physical, chemical, biological, and psychological — on children's health and development
